Main application: 1,3-Benzodioxole is synthesized from catechol with disubstituted halomethanes. It is useful in gemological simulant detection. It is precursor for perfumes, insecticides, and pharmaceuticals. In the fragrance industry, it can be used in synthesize a series of edible and cosmetic fragrances such as piperonal, heliotropin, and sesamol. In the pharmaceutical industry, 1,3-benzodioxole is an important intermediate in the synthesis of cardiovascular drugs L-methyldopa and sulfonamides anti-inflammatory drug pyrazoline sulfonamide. In the pesticide industry, it can be used to synthesize low toxicity insecticides.
